FAQs

What is a consumer proposal?

A consumer proposal is a legally binding agreement established by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and part of Canada’s Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. It is an alternative for individuals to file for bankruptcy. Usually, consumer proposals must be completed within five years.

How much does it cost to submit a proposal?

The fee to submit a consumer proposal is set by the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and must be submitted by Licensed Insolvency Trustees. In most cases, the Trustees will charge a certain % and deduct it from the future payments. We offer a No Fee Guarantee until we help you settle your debt.

Who is eligible for a consumer proposal?

To be eligible for a consumer proposal, you must be a person (not a business), be insolvent (you are unable to pay your debts when they’re due), have debts less than $250,000 (not including your mortgage), have a stable source of income and no prior proposals already in submission. A consumer proposal can only be submitted by Licensed Insolvency Trustees - like Reynolds & Associates.

Will a proposal affect my credit rating?

Indeed it will. There will be a special notation on your credit report indicating that you’ve filed a consumer proposal (also known as a “R7 credit rating”). This will make it extremely difficult for you to borrow money from banks, private lenders or credit unions until the completion of the proposal (3 years after you pay off all the debts or 6 years after you signed the initial proposal).
